Hunting Season Dates

Opening and Closing of Hunting Season in France:

The opening and closing dates of hunting season vary by department. You can check the specific dates for each department on the website of the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). It’s also important to note that dates may differ depending on the species being hunted (e.g., roe deer, red deer, hare, wild boar, etc.) and the type of hunting practiced (e.g., drive hunting, shooting, coursing, etc.).
The closing dates for hunting also depend on the department. To find out more, it’s recommended to visit the website of the hunters' federation for the relevant department. If traveling to a different department, make sure to verify this information. Decree 86-571 of March 14, 1986 stipulates that the general closing date cannot go beyond the last day of February.

Hunting Days:

Hunting days vary from one municipality to another. Typically, signs at the entrance of trails or along roads indicate hunting days.

Hunting Hours:

It’s also essential to pay attention to hunting hours. Hunting may begin two hours before sunrise and continue up to two hours after sunset. For waterfowl, hunting can even occur at night from fixed posts in certain departments.
For sedentary and migratory game, hunting is only permitted during the day, from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.
Night hunting may be authorized by the prefect under specific conditions to address a temporary need.
